We Got to do This Together

A great leader is a great communicator. Sometimes you witness this in a boardroom, sometimes in a locker room. It was evident when Iowa’s Head Coach Lisa Bluder spoke to her team after Sunday’s disappointing loss in the NCAA women’s championship game.

“Do not hang your heads,” Coach Bluder said. “Celebrate the fact that we were here. Celebrate that we got to do this together.”

What a great message! Her team brought joy to so many families—including mine. Thanks for the memories!

4 Reasons to Admire Caitlin Clark’s Speaking Skills

Caitlin Clark’s shooting skills are impressive, but so are her speaking skills. Here are four reasons Caitlin shines when she gets behind a microphone:

  1. She’s composed. Caitlin never looks flustered. This comes from lots of experience being interviewed.
  2. She’s succinct. Caitlin always provides a direct answer. She doesn’t ramble or dodge questions.
  3. She sticks to a few key messages. Interviewing on the fly at busy times—during half-time, moments after a game ends—isn’t easy. Caitlin manages that stressful scenario well by sticking to her key messages: she’s grateful to her coach, her teammates and her fans; she’s proud that women’s basketball has been elevated. This message is exceedingly gracious, and it’s one she repeats in interview after interview—as she should. Repetition is good. It’s memorable.
  4. She makes good use of non-verbals. Caitlin makes solid eye contact with the interviewer and smiles throughout the conversation. This makes her come across as sincere—and happy to be there. She ends the interview with a bigger smile, which functions like an exclamation mark, a positive way to wrap it up.
