Business Writing

Overview:

“Business Writing” is either a 1/2 or 1 day program designed to provide participants with the opportunity to refine the written word.  This is a hands-on program allowing ample opportunity to apply the skills immediately after they are introduced.

Learning Objectives & Sample Agenda:

Identify the three reasons for writing in business, and how email correspondence is unique.

  • Participants will experience the vital importance that business email correspondence has for the organization and its customers.
  • Participants will discuss the three reasons for writing in business correspondence and review sample messages.
  • Participants will write a ‘baseline’ email and letter for use during the training.
  • Participants will discuss and apply a model for effective correspondence within their organization.

Define essential writing terms and how they can be applied to the writing (style, format, content, organization, objective).

  • Participants will complete a series of interactive exercises to learn the impact of style, format, content, organization, and objectives. This will apply to both email and letters.

Re-write abstract, redundant, incomplete, or otherwise ineffective communication.

  • Participants will edit and compose numerous email and letter correspondences in each of these areas, based upon real-world writing tasks participants do on the job.

Compose business email using active voice.

  • Participants will edit several examples of passive voice construction taken from actual emails and letters within their organization.

Evaluate writing style and its probable effects on the reader.

  • Participants will practice assessing their reader’s situation, potential reactions, and overall needs when composing email and letter correspondence. Participants will appreciate the tone that can be implied from written correspondence.

Proofread one’s own writing to improve readability, correct spelling errors, grammatical errors, and other factual mistakes.

  • Participants will proofread email and letter samples to find the errors and correct them.
  • Participants will conduct an interactive exercise on common grammatical mistakes in business email and letters.
